Contrast Leggings - Modification Tutorial

Contrast Legging Modification

I've seen lots of contrast leggings from companies like Lululemon and Athleta.  I love those companies and love their leggings.  I thought it might be fun to try my hand at making some contrast leggings for myself instead of purchasing them.

Side note:  those shoes are not mine!  They are my daughters cheer shoes.  I had to wear them because she took MY shoes to school with her for tennis.  So sorry about the ugly white shoes, I'll get her when she gets home!  Stinker!

Let's get started on the tutorial for Contrast Leggings.  You can make these in no time at all and go for a run.  ( BTW, you will NEVER catch me running!  They are cute though!)

Print the Basic Leggings pattern and transfer to wax paper or parchment paper.  Be sure to transfer markings from the pattern.  The most important marking is the line down the middle.

Cut the pattern piece in half, down the center line.

Now we need to figure out the triangle placement.  I used the size XS length line for the bottom marking of my triangle.  (I also measured roughly to be sure the triangle would fall somewhere behind my knee or on my calf.)  This is all personal preference so you get to choose where it goes.

Draw the triangle (or any shape) on the "back" pattern piece.  I put the top of the triangle at the point that I measured for the back of my knee. The bottom of the triangle is at the XS capri line.  You will also need to add a 1/2in seam allowance to the top and bottom of the triangle.  (You can see that I made a separate pattern piece for the triangle.  That is where I added the seam allowance to the top and bottom of the triangle.)

Place the pattern piece on the fabric, be sure to cut 2 pieces RST.  I folded up the triangle that I just drew and cut the "back" leggings with a slant at the bottom that will be the top of the triangle.  Cut out the triangle piece in a contrast fabric, with the seam allowance added.  You will also need to cut the bottom part of the leggings, from the bottom of the triangle to the hem.

You should have 2 "front" pieces, 2 "back" pieces with a slant (1/2" seam allowance added), 2 triangles with 1/2" seam allowance, "back" bottom piece and waistband.

Here is the triangle with the seam allowance  added and the pant pieces.

Be sure the triangles are facing the right direction and attach them to the pants "back" at the slant, RST.

Iron.  You can also topstitch at this point.

Now attach the two bottom pieces at the bottom of the triangle.  Below you see 2 "back" pieces with the triangle attached.

Attach the back piece to the front piece at the side seams.  From this point forward, you can follow the pattern directions.  (Your leggings should look just like the pattern piece except it now has a triangle contrast.)

And, ta-dah!  Contrast leggings.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Did you know there are other legging modifications that you can check out?   Click here to see how to make two toned leggings.  You can also find a tutorial for making the leggings with a mega ruffle here.  And finally, find out how to add a simple ruffle here.

Kara

Running Skirt Sew Along Day 4

Running Skirt Sew Along Day 4

Pin the skirt to the leggings at the waist.  Be sure the skirt is the correct length.

Mark the skirt/leggings and waistband into quarters.

Pin the waistband to the skirt/leggings by matching up the pins.  Be sure the seam of the waistband is at the back of the skirt/leggings.

When attaching the waistband, slightly stretch the waistband to fit the skirt/leggings.  Congratulations!  You now have a running skirt.  I hope you enjoyed the sew along and I hope you will share your pictures with us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

Running Skirt Sew Along Day 2

Running Skirt Sew Along Day 2

Today you will complete the skirt portion of the running skirt.

Sew side seams together.  I serged the side seams together.

Finish the hem.  I used my coverstitch machine to finish the hem but you could also leave it raw or use a twin needle.  If you don't feel confident about the length of the skirt, wait to finish the hem.  Once the pants are put together, you can be sure the skirt is the perfect length.

Cut the waistband.  Sew short sides of the waistband together to form a tube.  Set the waistband aside until we finish the leggings.

You should have a completed skirt minus the waistband.

Cuffed Pajamas Tutorial -- Classic Tee & Leggings modification

FREE tutorial on how to modify the Classic Tee and the Leggings patterns from Jocole to add knit cuffs at the bottom of the sleeves and legs.
Materials Needed:
Classic Knit Tee or Ruffle Tee (or Mix&Match Classic Sleeve) -- pdf sewing patterns
Basic Knit Leggings or Ruffle Leggings -- pdf sewing patterns
Pencil or pen
Ruler
Scissors
Paper and tape

Suggested Fabrics:
Jersey (my favorite is cotton/spandex), interlock, rib knit
** your cuffs need to be VERY stretchy, something with lycra/spandex is recommended.

the following picture is shown on a size 5, the blue lines are the original pattern lines, the RED lines are the newer pattern adjustment lines.

1.         FOLD the cuff in half lengthwise.  Align the short sides, RIGHT sides together.  Pin if necessary.

2.         STITCH cuff into a loop using a 3/8” seam allowance, RIGHT sides together.

[If using a serger, STITCH using a 1/4” seam allowance, trimming 1/8” from the edge.]

3.         FOLD cuff in half, aligning the raw edges, WRONG sides together.

4.         MARK cuff into quarters.

5.         MARK your sleeve/legging into quarters.

6.         With the sleeve/legging RIGHT side out, slip inside the cuff, RIGHT sides together, aligning the edges and matching the quarters marks and pin into place.

7.         STITCH cuff into place along the sleeve/legging using a 3/8” seam allowance.  You’ll need to stretch the cuff so it matches the length of the opening, but don’t over stretch!!  Backstitch to reinforce seam.  Start stitching at center back seam of the waistband.  A zigzag stitch is recommended for optimal stretchiness.

Yoga Waistband Modification

Do you have any of my knit pants patterns: Basic Knit Leggings, Ruffle Leggings or Everyday Ruffle Pants??  How about the Essential Pants, the Mega Ruffle Pants, the Flounce Ruffle Pants or even the Skinny Minnie Pants ??  They all feature an elastic waist ... have you ever wished you could do a yoga waist instead?!

pssst ... the instructions for adding the Extreme Ruffles (shown above) to the leggings patterns can be found HERE.

Well ... you ladies have twisted me arm ... but instead of creating and selling new patterns I've decided to write up a quick tutorial on modifying the existing patterns ... and passing along the savings to you !!  You're welcome.

For the Everyday Ruffle Pants or the Leggings::  Draw a new line (shown in RED) 1" below the original cutting line for whatever size you are planning on sewing.

For the Essential Pants, Mega Ruffle Pants, Flounce Ruffle Pants or Skinny Minnie Pants::  Draw a new line (shown in RED) 1 1/2" below the original cutting line for whatever size you are planning on sewing.

Cut a strip that is 4 1/2" wide for a regular knit yoga waistband ... or 8 1/2" for a knit fold-over yoga waistband ... and then cut the length of the yoga band use the cutting measurements included in the patterns for the elastic.

Skip the instructions for applying the elastic waist ... and instead follow THESE instructions ...

(above) FOLD the yoga waistband in half lengthwise.  Align the short sides, RIGHT sides together.  STITCH waistband into a loop using a 3/8" seam allowance.

(above)  FOLD yoga waistband in half, aligning the raw edges, WRONG sides together.

(above)  MARK yoga waistband and the waist of your Leggings or Everyday Ruffle Pants into quarters.

With the pants RIGHT side out, slip the pants inside the yoga waistband, RIGHT sides together, aligning the top edges and matching quarter marks and pin into place.

(above) STITCH yoga waistband into place along the waist of the pants using a 3/8" seam allowance.  You'll need to stretch the waistband so it matches the length of the waist opening, but don't over stretch !!  Backstitch to reinforce seam.  Start stitching at center back seam of the waistband.  A serger's overlock stitch or a zigzag stitch is recommended for optimal stretchiness.

Done and Done ... super easy ... and SUPER comfy ...
