Flat Rate of $10 per design + $5 per pattern piece

Example: A classic t-shirt has 4 pieces (front, back, sleeve, neckband) = $10+$20(4x5)=$30

We can work from a sketch, or a picture of an existing item -- or an idea in your head and we can help sketch it out.

Patternmaking Add-on:

Have you seen the Basic Knit Leggings? they are perfect for layering ... especially since we are coming into fall and winter. They have 2 length options capri (shown above) or full (which reach the ankle). Above they are paired with the Shoreline Knit Tank ... the pattern includes how to make ruffles along the neckline, but instead I opted to make it plain and add a dyed flower on the side (template included).

I'm busy orking on some new patterns ... a Easy Cap Sleeve Tee, in toddler and girl sizes (most likely 2-14) ... and a double layer ruffle skirt ... in NB-14 sizes.

You can get instructions on the bow on the shirt here ... I just cut a 2" wide strip of fabric, serged around the ends and used that as my "ribbon".

Little Girl Knee High Socks Tutorial

I adore putting my little girl in knee high socks, but I don't adore the high prices. Now you can make your daughter some cute knee highs from women's knee high socks.

1. Start with a pair of women's knee high socks.

2. Flip sock WRONG side out.

3. Use a glass and a rotary cutter to cut off the bottom of the sock right above the heel.

4. Stitch cut edges closed with a wide zigzag stitch (width:5, length 2-3), or use a serger.

5. Flip RIGHT side out and put on immediately and refuse to take them off.

Those bows above are made using 1 1/2" ribbon, and using the 4" template.

Stretchy Ruffle Instructions

Quick and easy instructions for creating S-T-R-E-T-C-H-Y ruffles. TWO easy, fool-proof methods for sewing ruffles: using clear elastic or single baste ruffles.

This is how I add stretchy ruffles to tight fitted knit garments ... like the legs on leggings, arms on t-shirts or the tops of socks. You can use ribbon, knit or woven fabric strips or even lace. Add some buttons or bows and you can make them even more awesome.

This is by far my favorite, and easiest way, to add some interest to clothing that I make for my daughters. I add them to necklines, sleeves, the sides of pants, skirts, belts, socks (shown above) ... you name it. Cute and Easy ... what could be better?

1. First decide what size bow you would like (this is the final width of the bow) and cut the length of ribbon. My template guides can be found HERE. (The bow in the following instructions is made with 5/8" ribbon and using the 3" wide template).

2. Second FOLD the ribbon in half and press the fold to create a crease -- this is the center.

3. Align the center crease in the middle of the template guide.

4. Fold one tail of the ribbon over the template, aligning the top of the tail with the bottom edge of the opposite tail.

5. Fold the opposite tail ribbon over the template, aligning the top of the tail with the bottom edge of the opposite tail.

6. Using a needle and thread STITCH a running stitch through the center, making sure to go through ALL layers of the ribbon.

7. Slide ribbon off the template and pull on the the thread to gather the stitches.

8. Pull on the thread and wrap around the center of the ribbons tightly, and tie with a knot to secure.

9. Trim ribbon tails (if desired) and heat seal with a lighter so the ribbon won't fray.

10. Finished bow ... isn't it pretty? Now it's ready to glue to a hair clip, or add it to clothing.

11. My preferred method to add bows to clothing is to stitch them directly to the garment using a zigzag stitch [my settings: width: 3-4, length:1.5-2] and to go forward and then backward to secure it. (Shown below added to the neckline on the Shoreline Knit Tank)

Alignment Tip

Tip: To help avoid misalignments (when the bottom layer feeds, but the top layer doesn't). This tends to happen more often when the starting point is more bulky. I like to put my finger nail behind the bulk of both layers and make sure I push the top layer so it feeds at the same time as the bottom. Your starting point will look just as clean as the picture below.

Summer 2011 Collection - Custom Handmade Women's Clothing

Instead of working on pdf sewing patterns, I've been busy working and sewing on a collection of custom handmade women's clothing. On Wednesday April 27th we did the photoshoot of the entire collection and I couldn't be more pleased with how they turned out. Leah Teofilo did the photography. What a rush to see my collection being modeled and photographed ... SERIOUSLY!

The summer collection involves 12 easy to wear pieces that can be dressed up or worn everyday. I adore versatility. They are made out of the most super soft knits ... you'll feel like you're wearing pajamas all day. I promise comfort and style from every piece.

These items are custom made to order and you can customize them: longer sleeves, shorter pants or longer skirts, and you get to pick the fabric and color. Each item is handmade by ME and professional finished for stretch and durability with my serger and coverstitch machines.

A couple people have asked me about a maternity line ... let me tell you, this collection isn't made for maternity but I care wear EVERY piece and I'm 7 months along. I always wear my designs throughout my pregnancies.

Larger Size Testers?

sooooo serious qestion here ladies, i'm going to be working on larger sizes (6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14) ... who is willing to test for me in those sizes.

i keep getting requests for larger sizes, but here is my problem ... my kids are 4 and 2 ... i have NO way to test the larger sizes myself, so i would need good testers and EXCELLENT pictures.

and while i'm at it, who would be willing to test women's patterns (xs, s, m, l, xl, xxl) ... i can't take pictures of myself right now ... i'm sort of ROUND!

Here's how it works ......

~ You leave your email in a comment when a new pattern is available for testing (on the post asking for testers for a specific pattern, not this one) and let me know that you're interested and what size you would like to test.
~ I reply and send you a copy of the pdf pattern, which you download, print and get sewing.
~ You tell me where I can improve and refine the pattern and instructions ... including how the size fits, grammatical errors and typos, if something needs to be added (pictures, more instructions, explanations, etc.). The more information you give me, the BETTER!!!
~ You get a free copy of ALL the final versions of the pattern once they are edited and finalized.

Organizer Planner + Download

As a busy mom of three kids three years and under I need ALL the help I can get. Appointments and housework often get lost in the jumble of just trying to juggle these cute little munchkins. Add to the mix all my health problems lately and things really got out of control. How had I let my Organizer Planner not help me keep things under control? Things are starting to get better ... I know I can't be the only one struggling.

I have my Organizer Planner set for half pages so I can keep it in a half-binder in my purse along with the rest of my life.

My Organizer Planner has 5 different tabs ... Notes, Calendar, Routines, Important Numbers, Bills/Budget.

Notes just contains lots of blank pages that I can fill up with sketches for new designs, confirmation numbers from phone calls, or something cool I saw on Dr. Oz or whatever else that jumps into my head.

Calendar contains blank planner pages that I print up ( front and back) and just fill in the date in the circle. I write whatever "zone" I am cleaning that week (I'll discuss that more in a little bit). I also print up the blank planner pages for menu planning as well -- well I'm trying to be better at menu planning.

Routines contains all my morning, evening, weekly routines, etc. It also contains all the "Zones" that I focus on each week for my detailed cleaning. Now I can hear some of you saying ... this sounds like Flylady ... well, it started out as Flylady but I got sick of her million emails so I adapted the system to fit into my life. I rotate the Zones however I want -- generally I just go in order, but if one area of my house seems to need a little extra TLC I'll add that zone into the rotation again.

Ok, I know it looks like a lot but if you actually keep up on it you'll notice an improvement rather quickly. The hard part for me when I started was getting rid of the clutter so I could get to the cleaning!! I still struggle with clutter but things are looking better. Do your zone cleaning whether or not you see dirt and you will NEVER see dirt again.

How I actually get my routines done: I'm a big fan of using timers. I set a timer for 10 minutes and clean (dishes, or whatever) and then set it again for another 10 minutes and enjoy some nice reading time -- I'm a big fan of rewards. My other favorite tool to actually help me keep my laundry under control is to put a load in the washer when I give my kids their breakfast, after they have watched 2 shows I switch it to the dryer (yes, I'm a bad mom who let's my kids watch tv in the morning). I try to fold and put it away during lunch ... and that's IT ... I ONLY do ONE load of laundry a day. It doesn't matter how much I have piled up, I don't need to stress. If I try to do more than one I know I wont end up putting it away and then what's the point?

Important Numbers contains all my family's addresses and phone numbers, birthdays and anniversaries. It also contains Emergency numbers (especially those for cell numbers ... you did know there was a difference didn't you?), direct numbers to my City's Police, City's Fire, County Sherriff, Poison Control, and all Pediatrician and Doctor Numbers and Medical Numbers.

Bills/Budget contains all of our bill information. Company, website, phone number, account number, website log-in information, date due and amount due. Yup ... I'm that anal -- but it makes paying the bills super easy. I have the bills in order of when they are due during the month and I have the first letter of each month that I cross off when I pay the bill so I can easily see when everything is paid.

Refashioned Outfit Mini-Tutorial

You can find CUTE patterned knits right in your closet. This outfit was made from an old shirt I no longer wanted to wear ... but I thought it would make a super super cute outfit for Finley.

I had extra black knit for the bottom of the shirt, but you could just cut up another shirt to finish the bottom. I used the Classic Knit Tee and Basic Knit Leggings patterns.

...

STEP 1: Cut out Basic Knit Leggings, using existing hem of shirt as the hem on pants (I used the capri length -- and folded up the hem allowance).

STEP 2: Fold along the centerline (both the front and back). Line up centerline on Classic Knit Tee with your fold line, and align the shoulder edge with the shoulder seam. (I folded down the 3/8" seam allowance since the shoulder seam is already sewn). I'm using the existing neckline as well -- it was a crewneck on me, but looks like a scoopneck on Fin.

STEP 3: Cut out Sleeves ... I just cut as much as possible and used the existing hem.

Step 4: Sew together the Basic Knit Leggings according to the sewing instructions.

Step 5: Attach sleeves in the armholes, and Sew underarms and side seams together.

Step 6: I then cut out 2 pieces of black knit that were twice as wide and the bottom part of my shirt and long enough to make the top go past her hips. I sewed the sides together, and did a rolled hem on the top and bottom edge. I basted in a gathering stitch 5/8" from the top edge and pulled it to the same length as my shirt. Then I top-stitch along the basting line to attach (leaving a little ruffle on top!!)

How to Shrink or Enlarge Templates

Do you have a template for a stencil or an iron-on transfer that you want a different size?

I know it can be confusing it can be to enlarge or reduce a template on your printer or a copy machine. How much should the image be magnified or shrunk? Before your start, you’ll need to know two dimensions: (1) the existing size – if the design has several dimensions, use the largest one for the calculation and (2) the desired size – how big you want the design to be after enlarging or reducing.

Desired Size / Existing Size = Percentage to Enlarge or Reduce

Use the same formula whether you’re reducing or enlarging the pattern.

Example: How to Enlarge Design

Existing design is 6” and desired size is 8”

8/6 = 1.33 (133%) – copy the pattern at 133% to get the desired size.

Free Halloween Matching Game

my kids were bugging me more than normal today. so i decided to make up a quick matching card game for them. since it was so quick to make i decided to share it for free. enjoy.

print game pieces at 100%, make sure that the page scaling is set to "none", and print2 copies of the page.

cut off 1/2 from each edge (margins).

and then cut apart the game pieces, they are 2 1/2" square. ENJOY!

i printed ours on cardstock ... i'm sure they would last longer if they were laminated.

It was the Marie Claire challenge: A single look that tells the audience who the "Marie Claire" woman is. She's intelligent, she's practical, she's confident.

The pieces I decided on were simple, but highly wearable and versatile. A black shrug with gray binding around the neckline. Gray leggings with a black waistband. The show-stopping piece: A simple white tank with a dyed-flower.

Dressing with style involves more than just wearing what you like. It takes strategy. By using your clothing’s fit, fabric, color, details, pattern and proportions to lengthen, slim and direct attention to exactly where you want it (and away from the places you don’t), you’ll be able to create a look that is both flattering and in keeping with your personality.

Wearing clothes that fit is the most important thing you can do to create a slimming, attractive look. Everything you wear should fit perfectly. This may seem obvious, but who hasn’t stood in front of a dressing room mirror and convinced herself that no one else will notice that the skirt is a bit too tight? News flash: it will give you away every time. Good fit means that clothes skim the body (showing curves without clinging to them) and that all the details (lapels, pocket flaps, slits, seams, darts, and pleats) lie flat. Any time clothing pulls or buckles, it not only creates a sloppy appearance, but adds pounds. The effect is the same for tight fitting and loose fitting clothing.

Fabrics that fall smoothly over the curves of your body are the most flattering. If fabric is too stiff, it takes on the shape of its own and winds up looking boxy; too thin, and it clings to every bump and bulge; too bulky or too shiny, and it adds pounds. Just right is a matte fabric free on unwanted heft but with enough body to slide over problem areas.

Color.

As anyone who has ever stepped out of the house in a red dress knows, color catches the eye and can make you look terrific.

Monochromatic. There are two compelling reasons to dress in one color, head to toe: The long, unbroken line it creates makes for a pulled-together look, and an overall color can actually make you appear slimmer. Stark color contrasts draw the eye and form horizontal lines that divide your body, making it appear wider and shorter. And while you can achieve the effect with any color, darker shades, which absorb more light, are the most slimming.

Bright and light colors. Even though dark colors can make you appear slimmer, and lighter, brighter can do the opposite, there is still a place for vivid hues in your wardrobe. By strategically placing paler or brightly colored pieces near or over a part of your body that you like, you’re making sure it gets the attention it deserves. Details, color and naked skin can be used to divert attention to a place you’d rather emphasize. So by all means use beading along your neckline to draw attention from your large derriere. Just be wary of too much of a good thing. Anything that adds an additional layer or girth — ruffles, patch pockets, wide lapels, big buttons or epaulettes — only accentuate what’s underneath.

With pattern, there are four considerations: color, size, direction and the subtleties of stripes.

Color. Tonal patterns (pink or red) attract less attention then those in contrasting colors, and the darker the background, the more slimming the print.

Size. Always choose prints that are in scale with your size. Petite figures are more flattered by small, low-contrast prints, while taller women can take bigger prints with more contrast. Large women should also choose bigger prints, but may benefit more from the slimming power of a low-contrast design. A uniform, all-over pattern, which keeps the eye from resting on any one spot, is also a good diversionary tactic for voluptuous bodies.

Direction. Sometimes the print itself creates a line, and sometimes the negative space does it. Either way, vertical lines are preferable to horizontal lines, and diagonal lines that are more vertical than horizontal will have the same elongating effect as a true vertical.

Stripes. When it comes to wearing stripes, the decision involves more than simply choosing between horizontal or vertical lines. While it’s generally true that verticals lengthen and slim and that some horizontals will make a heavy area look heavier, it all depends on the size and spacing of the stripe. Widely placed horizontal stipes, for example, can give the illusion of a bigger bust and — when worn with a dark bottom — can help balance a pear-shaped figure. No matter which way your stripes fall, however, make sure the garment is on the loose side. If it’s too tight or stretchy, you’ll wind up wearing squiggles!

Generally, to avoid cutting your body right through the middle horizontally, every outfit should be either "short-over-long" (or full) or "long-over-short" (or narrow). A short narrow jacket over an A-line skirt or a cropped jacket over trousers is one way to achieve the "short-over-long" look. correct bra sizing

most women are wearing the wrong bra size, so i've decided to write a post on how to find the correct fit.

there are two elements to your bra size: the band size (ie. 32, 34, 36) and cup size (ie. A, B, C). you will need a measuring tape to determine your bra size.

1. band size:

using a soft tape-measure, measure around the ribcage directly under the bust. be sure the tape is smooth across the back and level with the front. add 5 to this measurement to obtain your band size.

for example: if your ribcage measurement is 29" + (5) = 34" band size. if the resulting band size is an odd number like 33", you can usually go to the next even band size (34").

2. cup size:

measure loosely around the fullest part of your bust, holding the tape measure straight but not tight. subtract your band size from this measurement.

the result would be your cup size. if the different is:

less than 1" to 1" = A cup

more than 1" to 2" = B cup

more than 2" to 3" = C cup

more than 3" to 4" = D cup

more than 4" to 5" = DD cup

for example: if your band size is 34" and your bust measurement is 35", you wear an "A" cup.

you should take your measurements while you are wearing a non-padded underwire bra or a tight-fitting seamless t-shirt.

q. are the straps adjusted for individual comfort?

a. straps should be adjusted to give support to the bust without cutting into the shoulders. if the straps are falling down, you may not be filling up the cups. try a smaller cup size.

clean out your closet

everyone has too much clothing in their closets. most people only wear about %20 of the clothes that they own. lets get rid of the things we no longer wear. cleaning out your closet will make it easier to get dressed in the morning (less choices) and make your laundry easier (you always put laundry off longer than you should -- because you still have more clean clothes and if you washed all your clothes you wouldn't be able to put them away because your closet is full!)

pull your clothing out of your closet one at a time and try it on -- think about the words you hear in your head. do they make you feel absolutely beautiful or do you feel bad? going through the clothing in your closet is difficult because it can evoke an entire spectrum of feelings. your closet didn't get out of control in one day and you wont be able to clean it out in one day either. take you time, spend 15 minutes here and 15 minutes there.

you will begin to see a pattern of your favorite items. we all have a favorite color, fabric or style that brings a smile to our face. i love jeans and pink. it's all about what you love and how you feel when you wear your clothes.

(i'm not saying you should only have this, you can have more, these are BASIC foundations to build upon)

undergarments: 7 pairs that you love and 7 pairs for that wonderful time of the month.

bras: 7 - at least 1 black, 1 natural and 1 white - but colors are fun and make you feel pretty no matter what.
slips: 1 black and 1 white
socks: 7 pairs for the summer and 7 pairs for the winter (i like ankle socks in the summer and colors in the winter)
pants/slacks/jeans: 1 good pair of black wool slacks for dressy occasions and 1 pair of lightweight black for summer, 2 pairs of jeans, 1 pair of tan pants or khakis
skirts: 1 black wool winter skirt and 1 black summer skirt, 1 tan or khaki skirt, and 1 printed summer skirt
dresses: 1 little black dress, 1 summer dress
blouses: 1 black, 1 white and 2 colored
t-shirts: 6 (1 black, 1 white 4 colored)
coats: 1 black and a nuetral

you should only keep clothing that fits you and you feel fabulous in. a great way to see what you are actually wearing is to turn your hangers backwards and only flip them the right way after you wear something. after a sest time period (3 months, 6 months, whatever works for you) get rid of anything that is still on a backwards hanger.

i know you might be tempted to hold on to some clothing that no longer fits you (you know what i'm talking about: those jeans that are 2 sizes too small) how long have those been hanging in your closet anyway? let them go, if you do end up losing the weight do you really think you wanna wear clothes that are old? nope, you'll wanna celebrate by wearing new clothes that flatter your new figure.

organize your closet - shoes

the first step towards a more organized wardrobe is with an organized closet. when your closet has some organization you'll be able to find that putting together outfits are suddenly easier.

let's start with our shoes. where are your shoes? are they dumped in a pile on the floor of your closet (or worse next to the front door) and you can't find the mate to your black pumps? or are you wearing the same 3 pairs constantly while the rest are gathering dust?

examine each and every shoe you own and ask youreslf: are they worn out, scuffed, out of style or too small/big? when was the last time i wore these? toss the shoes that no longer fill your needs into 2 different piles:

1. give-away. (these are still in good condition that you no longer wear -- for whatever reason)

2. trash. (these are scuffed, unevenly worn heels, stitching coming undone, etc.)

having good basic shoes is essential to a good wardrobe. after the basics you can build it up by adding in fun, trndy styles. your basic shoes should cover every occasion for your lifestyle. here is a list of shoes that most women need:
1 pair of athletic shoes

2 pairs black/brown/navy casual or walking shoes
2 pairs black/brown/navy shoes for work

1 pair dressy evening shoes

1 pair summer sandals

2 pairs black/brown boots for winter

purchase the best quality that your budget will allow in your basic shoes -- these are the ones that you'll wear over and over again. spend less on trendy shoes because they are not worn as much. have fun but keep comfort in mind while buying shoes.

you may have a lot of shoes already, but according to a recent survey conducted by Mervyn's 61% of women own more than 11 pairs of shoes. most women only wear half of these shoes on a regular basis. how many pairs pf shoes do you own?

shoes can change the look of an outfit completely. for example, take some basic jeans and add a colorfull t-shirt and some athletic shoes for a casual look -- then take the same jeans add a dressier blouse and some heels -- the look of the jeans instantly becomes dressier because of the heels.

how should you store your shoes? well that is different for everybody. you could store them in a shoe cubby, or line them up on shelves or a shoe rack. you can store them in their original boxes (a photo taped on the box makes them easier to find) or you could purchase clear plastic shoe boxes (i've found them at the dollar store and the same ones at target for a dollar). if you are tight on space there are over-the-door organizers or even hanging organizers.

tip: to help boots keep their shape roll a magazine and slide it in.

now that we've tossed some shoes, take an inventory and access your needs. write out a list of those needs before you go shopping. here are some shopping tips :

1. shedule shopping when you have plenty of time to try on and visit several stores -- you don't want to feel stressed or rushed.

2. if you find something that you love and that fits perfectly put them on hold -- then go visit several stores and shop around to compare. you may just find the same thing at another store for less!

3. always shop for shoes towards the end of the day, this is when your feet are the largest.

4. when trying on shoes make sure you wear socks or hosiery that you will wear with the shoe. (nylons with pumps and thick wool socks for winter boots)

5. buy shoes that are comfortable -- walk around the store in them (not just try them on and stand still, walk around). don't waste your money on cute trendy shoes that hurt your feet, you'll end up not wearing them.

now that your shoes are organized, try different shoes with other outfits and see if you can wear your old shoes in a new way.

Jocole clothing was formed in July 2005 by Jodi Jean Baird with the help and incouragement of her sisters. Jodi always thought that she dressed modestly. After going through the Redlands Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she began to realize that she wasn't. Many of her shirts were just too short and too low cut. She thought to herself that if she just had some undershirts that covered her in all the right places, she could wear her existing clothing without compromising her modesty -- that she would no longer have to tug and pull at her clothes to cover her. Cottage Industry Licensing, single person sewing-for-profit-home-business and not a license for commercial industry.

Step 1: Purchase the pattern and familiarize yourself with the construction.

Step 2: Purchase the Cottage Industry License.

Note: Once a License is issued fees are non-transferable and non-refundable. Renewals are on a yearly basis per pattern. All for sale items REQUIRE labels giving full designer credit to Jocole {“This item was created using the PATTERN NAME ™ pattern by Jocole from jocole.com”} when listing or describing items online or printed, on websites, blogs and on hangtags.

This commercial license gives you the freedom to sell your finished products made from my design and instructions. It does NOT give you permission to sell or give the pattern. Licensing FAQ

Question: Is there any limit to the number of items I can sell per year with any of your contract options?

Answer: It depends on the option you choose.

Question: Can I purchase my pattern and licensing at the same time (or licensing before the pattern)?

Answer: I always suggest that you purchase your pattern in advance to familiarize yourself with the sewing process before you apply for a license – but if you are confident enough, yes you can.

Question: I am in a partnership with another WAHM, can we share a license?

Answer: Sorry, you each need to purchase separate licenses. There is currently no special discounts provided.

Question: If I purchase additional pattern licenses at a different time do I get the discounted rate?

Answer: Yes, of course, as long as you have purchased a Cottage Industry License in the same option category within the last 12 months.

Question: I don’t want to purchase a cottage license or sew Jocole patterns as a business. However, I have a friend/relative who wants me to make them an item. My friend/relative wants to pay me for this service. Can I do this without having to buy a cottage license?

Answer: It is illegal for you to sew products for money using our patterns without a license, even if you are only doing it on a small scale. However, there is a simple solution for this type of situation which will not require you to pay for a full cottage license. Simply have your friend/relative purchase their own copy of the pattern. Then you may legally sew for them using the pattern and have them pay you for your services. When you complete the projects for the purchaser, you return both the pattern and your sewing projects to them. In this way, you are contracting your sewing services but not violating the copyright for the patterns, since the person owns their own pattern is ONLY paying your for your sewing services.

Question: Can I trace, photocopy or re-print my patterns to share with friends? What about for my own use?

Answer: Jocole patterns are copyrighted, therefore it is illegal to distribute or share them with others, whether for sale or free of charge. Each user must purchase his/her own copy of the pattern to use.

You may, however, re-print, trace or copy part or all of the pattern and instructions for your own use. In fact, since these are multi-size patterns, we consider it necessary to do so in order to be able to utilize all of the different sizes.
